The UK government has announced new measures to limit how much people can spend on online slot games in a single spin. This step is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing gambling addiction and its harmful effects. Under the new rules, adults aged 25 and older will have a maximum limit of £5 per spin, while younger players aged 18 to 24 will only be allowed to bet up to £2 per spin.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has also confirmed plans to impose a mandatory levy on gambling companies. The funds raised from this levy will go toward addiction treatment and support services. According to the DCMS, these changes aim to create a safer gambling environment. However, representatives of the betting industry have expressed concerns, claiming the government might be overstepping.

In 2023–2024, 45% of callers to GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline reported issues with online slot games. Despite these efforts, enforcing the new rules might prove challenging. Former gambler Dan Chandler, now a therapist with the gambling support service Breakeven, pointed out how some players circumvent age verification. He explained that younger players often use the personal details of adults to set up accounts while using their own payment methods for deposits and withdrawals. This tactic, known as “gaming the system,” is a common issue in the gambling world.
The number of people seeking help for gambling addiction has been rising. The NHS reports a sharp increase in referrals for gambling-related treatment, with cases more than doubling compared to the previous year. Gambling Minister Fiona Twycross emphasized that the new stake limits aim to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly young adults. She stressed that gambling addiction can damage finances, relationships, and overall well-being.
This overhaul will also introduce the first-ever legally required levy on betting companies to fund addiction treatment services. Previously, online slot games had no betting limits, making them more accessible for those prone to problem gambling.
